Mentor Program Helps Recent
Immigrant CGA Students
CGA-BC continues to partner with the Immigrant Services Society of BC (ISSofBC) to deliver a mentorship program. ISSofBC will match CGA students and members who are newcomers to Canada (i.e., arrived in the past five years) with CGA students or members who are thoroughly familiar with accounting and finance work in Canada.
Under this program, mentors will assist mentees in the following ways:
- Provide an understanding of the Canadian workplace and culture
- Assist in identifying the professional and technical skills required to meet market demands
- Assist the mentee to improve their self-marketing techniques and confidence
Mentors are not expected to:
- Provide or find a job for the mentee
- Provide course tutoring services to the mentee
If you are a CGA student who is looking for guidance in navigating the Canadian work environment and you have not been able to find work in the accounting or finance field you trained for in your homeland, and you would like to be matched with a mentor, please click here to complete the mentee form. Our mentors have expertise and experience in many areas of accounting and finance, and the ISSofBC takes care to match mentors that best meet mentee needs, experience, background and personality.
The program currently has mentors with the following job titles:
- client services accountant
- controller
- finance manager
- assistant finance manager
- financial processing specialist
- mutual fund accountant
- senior accountant
- tax auditor.
If you do not see an appropriate match in the job titles listed above, but are still interested in securing a mentor, we encourage you to complete the form, and your name will be kept on file until an appropriate match is found. If you have any questions about this program, kindly email Simone Leonard.
The demand for CGA members and students is scorching. For proof, see the
Hot Jobs page updated weekly. If you haven’t already
signed up to CGAjobs.org, do so. And don’t forget to post your resumé to the site.
