Mr. Bruce Acton, MBA, FCMC is the Managing Director, BC Division of Tantus. Bruce spends most of his time in the areas of strategic planning and process improvement, helping clients with business process redesign (BPR), activity-based costing (ABC), performance measurement (PM), information systems projects, quality assurance, as well as operational and program reviews. When not consulting, Bruce teaches management courses and seminars to a number of levels of organizations in both the private and public sectors throughout Canada and internationally. 

Rosemary Anderson  Rosemary Anderson, CA, has practiced exclusively in the commodity tax field since 1985. Formerly a partner with Price Waterhouse, Rosemary has extensive experience assisting large and small taxpayers with their sales tax issues. Rosemary joined Thorsteinssons in 2001. She is the immediate past chair of the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants Commodity Tax Committee and is the current co-chair of the CICA-Canadian Bar Association Customs Committee. She is also an active member of a liaison committee between the Ministry of Small Business and Revenue in Britiesh Columbia and taxpayers. Rosemary has spoken extensively about sales tax issues at many conferences and seminars.
 David Baines 

 David Baines, MBA, has been investigating and uncovering white collar crime for the past 23 years.  He has an MBA from the University of Western Ontario and has won four National Newspaper Awards, a National Magazine Award and five Jack Webster Awards.  His column in The Vancouver Sun appears regularly on Wednesdays and Saturdays and on other days as events occur.
 

Keith Baldrey 

 Keith Baldrey regularly reports live on Global BC’s Noon News Hour and 5 p.m. Early News, and files daily stories for the 6 p.m. News Hour.  He is also a weekly radio commentator on the ”Cutting Edge of the Ledge” segment of the Bill Good Show on CKNW, and he writes a weekly syndicated newspaper column for PostMedia.  Keith has covered B.C. politics for 25 years.
 

Heather Banham 

Dr. Heather Banham, is currently serving as Dean of the Okanagan School of Business at Okanagan College and has a background as an accountant, professor and manager.  She earned her Doctorate in Human Resources Management at the University of Southern Queensland, Australia and holds her professional accounting designation as a CGA (Certified General Accountant) in Canada and her CPA (Australia).  Her presentations to conferences on organizational change, leadership, small and medium enterprises, and international student success have been well received and earned a number of awards.

David Baxter  David Baxter, Futurist, Demographer, Economist. All these words describe David Baxter. The Executive Director of the Urban Futures Institute, Baxter is one of that rare breed of business thinkers who has the ability to conduct original research into business trends, but also possesses the presentation skills to deliver the conclusions in an entertaining and meaningful way. Since stepping away from management activities with Urban Futures in 2007, he has divided his time between traveling in Asia and Europe and building complex economic and demographic projection models. He is the Global Mobility Expert for the Employee Relocation Council based in Washington, DC, an honorary life member of the Mortgage Investment Association of BC, and a member of the BC Budgetary Transparency and Accountability Act Review Panel.
 
Ian Berry  Ian Berry, is a founding partner of the Berrant Group, an international training and facilitation firm based in Vancouver B.C.  Since 1995 The Berrant Group has been helping clients by providing practical, hands-on business skills training as well as planning facilitation and consulting services.  Their approach in the classroom balances the teaching of solid, core managerial skills with their firm belief that learning needs to be interactive and fun to be most effective. Ian has provided PD seminars to CGA -BC since 2003 and has taught thousands of participants in both private and public sector organizations.  UBC, SFU and the Coast Mountain Bus Company represent some of the organizations he has worked with recently.
 Fabian Biagetti 

Fabian Biagetti, Principal, Strategic Energy Group, has more than 20 years’ experience in various functions within the energy management sector. 
 

Fabian has focused his efforts on energy-related business practices and organizational changes in industrial, commercial and industrial sectors.  He has led hundreds of site-specific workshop sessions internationally with executive decision-makers of Fortune 1000 companies to optimization the business practices associated with energy utilization.
 

Based in Sacramento, California, Fabian holds a BS in civil engineering from UCLA and an MBA from Pepperdine University.

 Brian Blamey 

Brian Blamey, BA, CGA, brings his athletic endurance, zeal and energy to public practice at Galloway Botteselle & Company where he has been a partner since 1996. Brian deals with the everyday issues small to medium-sized businesses face regarding taxes, business expansions or reorganizations, acquisitions, valuations, and personal financial planning. Brian is also an effective teacher and receives many requests for presentations on behalf of CGA and to the medical community on the latest changes in tax laws and how to reduce taxes.

Brian is past Chair of the Porter Hétu International’s National Management Committee, a group of independent accounting firms across Canada and internationally.
 

 

James P   James P. (Jim) Blatchford, BA, MBA, CMA, FCMA, CFE, has more than 35 years experience in forensic and investigative accounting, litigation support and law enforcement. Jim’s forensic and investigative accounting engagements include numerous civil and criminal fraud investigations (including special purpose audits) focusing on corporate, insurance, public market, welfare, real estate, mortgage and telemarketing frauds. Jim has undertaken assignments for fidelity, bond, business interruption and other insurance claims, including preparing “expert opinion” reports on economic losses. Jim has also provided litigation support, due diligence and internal control and regulatory compliance reviews for corporate, government and First Nation clients.
 
Ward Blatch  Ward Blatch, CA is a Senior Associate with K2 Enterprises Canada. Since joining K2 Enterprises in 2005, Ward has provided consulting and training services throughout the United States and Canada. Ward also has his own practice in Nova Scotia which focuses on the issues of small accounting firms and professional businesses in Canada, providing training, support, and network evaluations.
Rebecca  Rebecca Bollwitt, built her first website in 1997, and has been blogging about life in BC since 2004 on Miss604.com, and podcasting since 2005. Miss604.com was voted "Best Vancouver Blog" by the Georgia Straight for 2009 & 2010, "Best Local Blog" by The Westender in 2010, and has been ranked within the top ten blogs in Canada. Recently named one of BC's Top 100 Women of Influence by the Vancouver Sun, Rebecca co-founded sixty4media, a WordPress website development firm, and has co-authored the book, Blogging to Drive Business.

Michelle Bonner, Vice President, Climate Smart, has been Climate Smart’s primary lead trainer since 2007. She brings almost two decades' experience in the environmental non-profit sector in Canada and the U.S. to the Vancouver-based social enterprise that helps businesses measure and profitably reduce carbon emissions.

She is a member of the GHG (Greenhouse Gas) Management Experts Network and has completed courses with the Greenhouse Gas Management Institute in organizational GHG accounting and offset project accounting.

Michelle holds a BA from McGill University in environmental studies and English literature.

Gregory D Boos  Gregory D. Boos is a noted U.S. immigration lawyer and award-winning cross-border advocate. His practice emphasizes business immigration, and he represents a broad spectrum of multi-national companies and international businesspersons. A results-oriented advocate, Greg has been named one of the world’s leading practitioners of U.S. immigration law by the International Who’s Who of Corporate Immigration Lawyers. Based on peer reviews, Martindale-Hubbell has awarded Greg an AV Preeminent rating, a testament to the fact that his colleagues rank him at the highest level of professional excellence.

Greg received his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Idaho in 1977. He is a member of the Washington State Bar Association and the bars of various US Federal courts. He is also licensed as a Practitioner of Foreign Law by the Law Society of British Columbia. The International Criminal Court has approved Greg to practice before it and includes him as one of approximately 300 lawyers worldwide on its List of Counsel.

Greg is an Adjunct Professor at Western Washington University where he acts as an external advisor to its Border Policy Research Institute. He is President of the Pacific Corridor Enterprise Council, a Vancouver BC – based non-profit organization formed to promote cross-border trade and advocate for removal of barriers that impede the legitimate flow of people, goods and services across the Canada/USA border. A member of the Vancouver Board of Trade, Greg sits on its International Relations Committee.
Trish Brydon 

Patricia (Trish) Brydon CGA, MA, RPC, is a coach and trainer with her company Optim People Partners. She is also a Senior Partner with Mercer Bradley who specializes in full-time and contract placement of accounting and finance professionals. Trish works with individuals, teams and organizations to help them to be successful and to thrive. She is a Certified William Bridges’ trainer (individual and organizational transitions) and certified Personality Dimensions® trainer. Dave Busse, CEC with over 20 years of experience in coaching and leadership development.  Dave has worked around the world with executive level leadership from an extensive array of backgrounds ranging from the financial sector, retail, restaurants, mining, transportation, education, medical, military and police services.

These three-part articles; are published on PD Network (an innovative, web-based resource that provides a broad range of professional development information designed to keep Certified General Accountants current on issues and developments within the accounting profession).  Michelle is a frequent presenter to audiences of professional accountants, academics and business people. Tim Clarke 

Tim W. Clarke, LLB, MA Econ. Tim's practice focuses primarily on tax litigation. He represents individuals and corporations of all sizes before the Tax Court of Canada, the Federal Court Trial Division and the Federal Court of Appeal in relation to income tax and goods and services tax matters.
Tim has completed the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants' In-Depth Tax Course. He has been a regular lecturer in business and taxation law at the British Columbia Institute of Technology and for the Certified General Accountants' Association of British Columbia. Prior to joining Bull, Housser & Tupper, Tim was a tax litigator with the Federal Department of Justice.

April Collier 

April Collier, Senior Trade Advisor with Pacific Customs Brokers is a licensed Customs Broker and Certified Customs Specialist, with over 30 years of international trade experience. April is the primary educational instructor for Pacific Customs Brokers’ Trade Compliance Seminar Series. Previously to working with Pacific, she worked with a team at North Seattle Community College to develop and present a number of Customs related seminars, in addition to developing and instructing courses in preparation for the Customs broker exam.

Tara Cree  Tara Cree, Ph.D. is a Senior Associate Consultant with Knightsbridge Leadership Solutions in Vancouver. Prior to joining Knightsbridge, she held senior consultant positions with a multi-national leadership development firm and two multi-national human resource consulting firms; and was the Executive Director of small consulting group.

Tara combines her Ph.D. in Organizational Psychology with her background as a leadership specialist and organizational development advisor to consult with public and private sector clients on strategic leadership issues. She has identified and developed leadership talent at all levels – from emerging leaders to executives. As an experienced executive coach, team facilitator, and consultant, Tara has designed and delivered numerous leadership development programs that include group sessions and one-on-one coaching. David Cory  David Cory, BEd, MA, is a Vancouver based performance improvement consultant who specializes in leadership development. With a graduate degree in adult education, and several years of experience as a leader, David works with corporate clients such as ABN AMRO Bank Amsterdam, Allstate Insurance (Dallas), and Phillips Medical Systems (Seattle) on the design, implementation and delivery of leadership development programs. Steve Dotto BW  Steve Dotto - Canada’s High-Tech Spokesman, Steve Dotto is host and executive producer of Dotto Tech, seen across the country on CHUM television. Dotto Tech is a “how to” technology show teaching Canadians how to get more out of their computers and digital devices. It follows on the heels of Steve’s very popular previous series, Dotto on Data and Dotto’s Data Café, which ran for 12 seasons on Canada’s educational networks to an annual audience of over 20 million viewers. Steve Dotto has been a very active member of the high-tech industry for over 15 years. John Doyle  John Doyle started his term as Auditor General of British Columbia on October 29th, 2007. Prior to his appointment, he was the Deputy Auditor General of Western Australia (WA).  He has also held the position of Chief Financial Officer in a number of major WA organizations in Western Australia.

John’s academic experience includes serving as Head of the School of Accounting & Finance at the University of Notre Dame in Australia and lecturing in finance, accounting, and computer science at several major universities. In 2007 he was appointed an Adjunct Professor to Notre Dame’s School of Business.

John is a Chartered Accountant with designations from the United Kingdom and Australia, as well as an MBA and a Master of Accounting.

Tracy Earle, Presenter, The Climate Project-Canada 

Tracy, a Registered Professional Forester, is an Environmental Coordinator with AMEC on hydro electricity transmission and distribution projects throughout B.C. She is also a presenter for The Climate Project-Canada (TCPC), the Canadian affiliate of Al Gore’s non-profit The Climate Project initiative. TCPC volunteers have been trained by the former U.S. Vice President and Nobel Laureate to educate the public about the science of climate change. Tracy has completed formal studies in sustainability management, greenhouse gas management, sustainable building, energy management and climate change. She holds university degrees in biology, forestry, environmental management and environmental engineering (pending), and she is a Certified Sustainable Building Advisor.

michael ell  Michael Ell, CGA, is a Public Practitioner/Consultant located in Nanaimo, BC.  He is the Primary Public Practice Reviewer for CGA-BC, an Associate of the Accounting Standards Board Private Enterprise Advisory Committee and a member of the CGA-BC Quarter-Century Club. Although he has spent most of his career in public practice, Michael also has experience in both government and industry. He develops and facilitates numerous courses for CGA-BC and Other CGA affiliates across Canada, in areas relating to public practice, standards, and the CICA Handbook. Besides providing services to various small business clients, the main focus of his practice is providing standards consulting to various accounting firms in BC and across Canada.

Laura Friedrich 

Brian Friedrich, MEd, C.Dir, CPA, FCGA, and Laura Friedrich, MSc, CPA, FCGA, are the principals of Friedrich & Friedrich Corporation, an accounting research, standards, and education firm. The firm’s major projects focus on determining and implementing best practices in competency-based accounting education and experience assessment. Through ongoing research and evaluation of the certification programs and competency frameworks of various international accounting bodies, the firm provides policy, procedure, and governance guidance; develops courses, examinations, and other assessments; as well as supporting the development of regional public accounting standards in Canada and internationally.

Both Brian and Laura have served as program and curriculum developers, authors and lecturers, and exam developers and markers for numerous CGA and university courses in Canada and abroad. With respect to volunteer positions, Laura currently serves on the CGA-BC Bylaws and Education Advisory Groups, and has been a member of the Ethics and Conference Committees, as well as the Chapters Advisory Group. Brian sits on the CGA-BC Board of Governors, its Audit Committee, and the National Professional Standards Committee. His previous roles include service on the Ethics, Discipline, Member Readmission, and Conference Committees, the Chapters Advisory Group, and the Educational Foundation as a Trustee. As a result of their volunteer involvement, Brian and Laura were presented with CGA-BC’s inaugural Ambassador of Distinction Award (2004), the JM Macbeth Award for service at the Chapter level (Brian in 2006 and Laura in 2007), the President’s Award for Education (2010), and the national Fellowship award (2011). 

John Gardner 

John M Gardner,  FCA, MBA,  CDir, has successfully led corporations in achieving significant financial accomplishments through the proper development and execution of a strategic plan.   Currently Mr Gardner focuses his time between corporate directorships and assisting companies achieve their competitive advantage through strategic planning.

Mr Gardner is a director of Alliance Grain Traders Inc. (AGT TSX) Canada’s largest processor and distributor of pulses. He is also a director of The Econo-Rack Group Inc., Canada’s predominant manufacturer and distributor of intralogistical warehouse systems. In both companies he is Chair of The Audit Committee.  Mr. Gardner is also Chairman of the Board of Habitat for Humanity Mississauga. Mr Gardner is a member of the Institutes of Chartered Accountants of Ontario and Newfoundland and was awarded an FCA from the Newfoundland Institute. He has an MBA from Memorial University of Newfoundland and is a graduate of the Chartered Directors program from McMaster University.

 David Gibbons, MBA.  The Refinery’s David Gibbons has built and led corporate leadership development programs for an impressive list of Canadian businesses. His teaching expertise focuses on what some refer to as “hard” business skills. He teaches financial analysis and planning, operations, business statistics and strategic decision-making. Prior to joining The Refinery, David was executive director of the Learning Strategies Group at SFU Business. Bill Good hosts BC’s leading talk show, the Bill Good show on CKNW and the Corus radio network.  He has

Bill Good has been a fixture in BC broadcasting since arriving at the CBC in 1967.  He had a colourful career in

hurst  Bruce Hurst, FCGA, CFP, CAFM earned his CGA designation in 1983. He has sat on several CGA committees and advisory groups since 1988, including the Public Practice Advisory Group, the Ethics, Discipline and Practice Review committees, CGA-BC Appeals Board, as well as having served as CGA Canada’s auditor for 5 years, and more recently, as the Chair of CGA-BC Association in 2011.  Bruce was also recently appointed by the Province of B.C. to the Auditor Certification Board.

As a Senior Shareholder and Director with the public practice firm of Reid Hurst Nagy Inc. in Richmond, Bruce has extensive experience in managing and directing many of RHN’s Not-For-Profit audit engagements as well as small enterprise advisory services.  He played a lead role in the development of a comprehensive audit program for First Nations and served as a representative on the Technical Advisory Group on First Nations Financial Reporting. He holds a Master’s degree in Language Education from the University of British Columbia, and works as a consultant and educator for both business and educational clients. Rod has been designing reading programs over the past 35 years for the public school system, corporate clients, as well as teaching Executive MBA Reading Programs for Simon Fraser University and University of British Columbia. Rod has worked with all levels of management and government agencies for employee training. His latest project is completing an online platform for interactive course delivery. He is a highly motivational instructor who strives to bring out the very best in his clients.

Megan Stanfield 

Megan Stanfield is a Vice President for the North Puget Sound region of Wells Fargo Private
Bank. As part of The Private Bank, Ms Stanfield works with clients to understand their needs
and then coordinates a team of specialists to provide clients with wealth management
services, including banking, credit, investment management and trust and estate services
through Wells Fargo Bank, N.A., as well as brokerage services through Wells Fargo Advisors,

C_Theriault  Carmen S. Thériault, Q.C., is a partner of Bull, Housser & Tupper LLP, Vancouver. An estate planning specialist, she regularly advises on the establishment and administration of domestic and offshore trust structures, business succession issues, estate administration, charities law and related litigation. David Thompson 

David Thompson BComm, LLB, is a registered trust and estate practitioner certified by the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners. Mike Thompson 

Mike Thompson, CMC, is former Associate Vice-President, Business Development with Royal Roads University Corporate Education and currently Associate Professor, Management Consulting with the Faculty of Management at RRU.  Prior to this, he was Senior Manager, Business Development for TD Commercial Banking with over 20 years commercial banking experience gained in the UK, Ontario, and BC.  His has an Honors Degree in Economics from the University of Manchester and a Diploma in Land Economics from the University of British Columbia.  Professional certifications include Fellow of Institute of Canadian Bankers (FICB) and Certified Management Consultant (CMC).

He is a Trustee representing CMC Canada within the International Council for Management Consulting Institutes (ICMCI), and a Director of the Institute of Management Consultants of BC (IMCBC), and was instrumental in forging the recent alliance between the CAMC and the Faculty of Management to establish the Management Consulting stream within the current MBA program.  He holds a visiting professor appointment at the Grenoble Graduate School of Business where he teaches Management Consulting to MBA program students.    

Mike has co-authored Business Diagnostics, with Richard Mimick, former Professor of Management Accounting at Ivey School of Business and Tourism Business Diagnostics co-authored with Richard Mimick and Frank Bourree.

 trefanenko  Jason Trefanenko, CGA is the managing partner in a mid-sized CGA firm McLaren Trefanenko Inc.

His 15 years of public practice experience, first as an employee of a boutique audit firm, then as sole practitioner, and now in his present firm as the managing partner has had one common theme, doing things better and more efficiently.

Staff and practice development are a primary focus in all of his efforts.

Gabriel Vitus   Gabriel Vitus, MSc, PEng (SA), is currently the Vice-President of Business Information Systems for CGA-Canada where he is involved in many strategic initiatives. His previous senior positions include the Director of IT at CGA-Canada, General Manager of the CGA Shared Services Facility Corp. and the acting Executive Officer Operations of Metro Electricity, Johannesburg. Professional activities include: member of the Board of Directors of the CIO Association of Canada, member of the Institute of the Electrical and Electronic Engineers, senior member of the South African Institute of Electrical Engineers and member of the Engineering Council of South Africa. He is a contributor to the technology columns of both, CGA-BC and CGA-Canada magazines and frequently presents technology seminars to CGA members.
 
 Gerry Wahl  Gerry Wahl, B.Comm (Actuarial Science), CMA, MBA.  Gerry’s background is accounting, taxation, treasury and finance and has been responsible for major systems and business re-engineering projects. He has worked for CRA as a business auditor, as a mine controller and the assistant treasurer for Cominco Ltd.  and Teck Resources, and was the treasurer for Teck Cominco Alaska Inc.  Gerry has expertise in the areas of environmental and reclamation regulations and security, WCB, Post Retirement Benefits and LTD. As the Assistant Treasurer and Investment Manager for Teck's numerous global pension programs, Gerry has acquired a unique background and financial and investment expertise in the area of pensions and now provides pension and accounting consulting services for businesses and professionals. Gerry facilitates pension seminars for the CMAs and Federated Press, is a frequent presenter at national pension conferences and seminars and has had several articles published on pension topics. He is member of the Financial Executive Institute pension committee and has been actively involved in pension reform in Canada.
Mark Walsh  Mark Walsh, FCA, has been a Principal at the Accounting Standards Board (AcSB) since 2003. Amongst other projects, Mark was directly involved in the creation of Accounting Standards for Private Enterprises (ASPE). He continues to provide staff support to the AcSB on these standards in addition to a number of IASB projects including Leases, Revenue and Joint Arrangements.  Mark is a past member of the AcSB and past member and Chair of the Emerging Issues Committee.
Prior to joining the AcSB, Mark spent 30 years with Imperial Oil in Toronto and Calgary where he was responsible for all financial reporting.

Sue Wazny  Sue Wazny, MSc, Dip. Welters  Michael Welters, LLB, is a partner in the Tax Group of Bull, Housser & Tupper LLP. Michael's practice is focused on business tax, particularly with respect to resource taxation and cross-border tax issues. He provides tax planning advice to both private and public companies  on a whide variety of tax issues. Michael also represents clients in tax litigation. Ronald Wong 

 Ronald Wong, BCom, CGA, CFP, has significant experience in public accounting, educational training programs, and curriculum development. He is currently working as a curriculum developer with CGA-Canada and is an online lecturer for the CGA Issues in Professional Practice (PA1) and Strategic Financial Management (PA2) capstone courses.
