“What will the next 25 years look like?” Predicting the future is not easy, even for really smart people like CGAs, but it was on the minds of many who attended the recent meeting of the Quarter Century Club on May 10. The popular annual event celebrates and honours the men and women who have achieved 25 years of active CGA membership.
This year, 185 CGAs qualified to join the celebrated 25-year club, another 18 qualified for the 50-year club, and many of them convened at the beautiful Sutton Place Hotel in Vancouver to mark their achievement.
For the second consecutive year, CTV Morning Live Weathercaster Marke Driesschen served as master of ceremonies and after warming up the crowd with some humorous remarks, he ceded the podium to Candace Nancke, FCGA, Chair of the Association’s Board of Governors.
Mrs. Nancke spoke about how the Quarter Century Club dinner was not simply about commemorating a milestone but really about celebrating each member’s journey along the way.

“As you reflect on your career, let there be no doubt that it has been a success in large part because you set your goals not by what other people deemed important but rather by what was best for you,” Nancke said. “I can state without any reservations that your professional and personal accomplishments are a testament to your ability to overcome challenges, your respect for the profession, your thirst for knowledge, and your willingness to help others.”
Mrs. Nancke also made the point that these core CGA qualities would serve them well as the Association proceeds with unification of the profession under the CPA banner. “This is a time for all us to bring the values and unique traits that made us so strong as CGAs and help build an even stronger CPA,” Nancke said. “I believe we stand at the threshold of opportunity and we are poised to enter a world where we can thrive and succeed just like each of you has done for the past 25 years.”

Of course, there was some important business to attend to and Bill Schulz, Chair of the Quarter Century Club, presided over the Club’s annual general meeting. Ursula Viney, CGA, who serves as a Trustee of the CGA-BC Educational Foundation, also spoke about the importance of ‘giving back’ and recounted a touching story about how the Foundation’s support was instrumental in helping one member achieve her goal of becoming a CGA.
For many in attendance however, the highlight of the evening was being invited to come up on stage to receive their Quarter Century Club Award. As each member came on stage, Driesschen shared a few highlights about what each member had achieved during the past 25 years.
Art Stavenjord, CGA, Henry Schmidt, CGA, and Richard Long, CGA, were honoured as new Members Emeriti.
The new Quarter Century Club members were naturally in a festive mood and qall quite pleased to be honoured for their careers. In fact, at no time was this more evident than during the final awards presentations of the evening. Richard Long, Henry Schmidt and Art Stavenjord were in attendance and they received the loudest applause as they were honoured as Members Emeriti.
Their moment on stage closed out a wonderful evening that celebrated the newest Quarter Century Club and Half Century Club members for their outstanding service and contribution to the accounting profession.
