Members: Attend a Special Convocation |
|
For the hundreds of newly graduated CGA-BC students, Saturday, November 8 will be a turning point in their lives as they celebrate the completion of their studies, recite the Oath of Obligation and are recognized as Certified General Accountants by all for the first time.
The class of 2008 is expected to produce one of the largest turnouts in recent memory. This will also be the last public event commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the designation. To mark the centennial, we will screen a video saluting the spirit of CGA, its history and future.
Convocation is the emotional high-water mark of the Association’s calendar, a day of pride for the newly designated, their families and supporters—and for members recalling the days they became CGAs.
Members, you are invited to join in the celebrations—the ceremony, dinner and dancing. To register for the event, contact Pardeep Clair before noon on Monday, November 3.

Time Running Out in Search for the Ultimate CGA |
|
Are you the ultimate CGA? To make your case, send us photos or video clips that demonstrate the unique way you demonstrate your pride in CGA. We’re looking for imagination, boldness, and a sense of fun—all in good taste.
We’re creating an Ultimate CGA page on our site that will let members and students decide for themselves. Of course, we’ll make it worth your while. The Ultimate CGA will be selected in the fall and receive an Okanagan wine tour package valued at $1,000.
Send your entry to I Am the Ultimate CGA before November 14.
The winner and those deserving special attention will be featured in the December issue of Outlook.

PEP Workouts Fit for Business Students, Employers |
|
After the success of our first PEP Workout with Vancity earlier this year, the CGA-BC Recruitment team decided to do it again with another PEP employer, Rescan Environmental Services Ltd.
The idea behind the PEP Workout is to provide post-secondary accounting students an opportunity to visit the offices of our Partners in Employment and meet CGAs and CGA students working there.
Rescan VP Finance and Administration, Linda Woo, CGA, and CGA-BC Manager, Recruitment and Employment, Jas Randhawa, CGA, cut cake at the second PEP workout.
The October 16 on-site visit let UBC and SFU students see the operations of Rescan, speak with human resources and meet accounting and finance professionals on the job. Specifically, it provided an opportunity for students to ask finance and accounting professionals about their training, the environment they work in, the route they took to achieve their current position, and opportunities they see in the field.
Meanwhile, PEP continues to attract new members from all sectors of the BC economy. In recent days, CGA-BC has welcomed half a dozen new partners into the PEP family:
- End of the Roll
- Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers
- Mann, Moulson & Co.
- Powerex Corp.
- Canaccord Capital Corporation
- District of Westside
That brings the number of PEP partners to 80.

CGA-Canada Rated a Top Employer |
|
For the second year in a row, the Certified General Accountants Association of Canada (CGA-Canada) has been recognized as one of Canada’s Top 100 Employers and one of B.C.’s Top 50 Employers for 2009.
This year, CGA-Canada moved its head office from leased space in downtown Vancouver to a brand new building owned by the Association in Burnaby. In order to minimize the disruptive effects of relocation, management consulted with all staff and communicated regularly on the progress of construction and the plans for the office move. Those consultations resulted in an employee transportation subsidy to offset increased commuting costs, a well-equipped in-house fitness facility, improved kitchen and lounge facilities, and a range of environmentally friendly initiatives.
The Top 100 Employers are published online at www.canadastop100.com/national.
CGA-Canada, the national association representing Canada’s Certified General Accountants, has offices in Burnaby, B.C. and Ottawa, Ontario. It employs 129 people.

Join Us as a Partner for Life |
CGA-BC is proud to be a Partner for Life with Canadian Blood Services. We’ve been donating blood and blood products since 2004, but we know we can do more. Donating blood is simple, easy, quick and extremely gratifying. Where else can you become a lifesaver and be rewarded with juice and cookies?
There are some restrictions on donating blood, so make sure you read about Basic Eligibility and the in-depth Donor Questionnaire.
As rewarding as donating as an individual feels, donating as part of a team is a powerful way to bond and create a strong sense of connection with peers and friends. When you donate together as an office or a chapter, don’t forget to sign in under the CGA-BC Partners for Life team.
Donating together lets organizations:
- improve and save lives
- boost employee morale
- create opportunities for staff development and leadership
- enhance their corporate reputation and visibility in the community
- fulfill their corporate social responsibility.
Please call 1 (888) 2 DONATE, or visit www.blood.ca to find out how you can give the gift of life.

Tax & Financial Strategies Course New Start Date: January 14 |
|
The next session of the Tax & Financial Strategies Program (T&FS) has changed its start date to January 14, 2009.
This real-life case study approach to tax and financial planning is for owner-managed businesses. The program addresses the life cycle of a business from incorporation through to business succession and includes dealing with a CRA audit and the death of a shareholder. Participants address income tax, GST, the accounting treatment of advanced tax issues, correspondence with lawyers and more.
This 10-month program consists of monthly teleconference discussions and assignments. Participants obtain up to 40 verifiable CPD hours from the comfort of their own office or home. T&FS will be of interest to both new and established practitioners seeking to upgrade their skills and improve their practices in the area of taxation by providing value-added services while minimizing the risk of professional liability.
The course takes an extended break during tax season to accommodate workloads at that time of year.
To obtain your copy of the course outline or the FAQ, contact Brigitte Ilk, CGA. To register, see the T&FS brochure.
